In 1940, during the Battle of France, Allied soldiers retreated to Dunkirk. Tommy, a young British soldier, is the sole survivor of a German attack. At the beach, he finds thousands of troops awaiting evacuation and meets Gibson, who is burying a body.
After Luftwaffe dive bombers attack, they attempt to board a hospital ship by bringing a wounded man on a stretcher but are ordered off. They overhear Royal Navy Commander Bolton hoping to rescue the troops. The ship is sunk by dive bombers; Tommy saves a Highlanders regiment soldier, Alex.
The three are sent aboard a destroyer, but it is hit by a torpedo before it can depart; Gibson narrowly saves Tommy and Alex from drowning, and the three are forced to return to Dunkirk.
